So, this week’s Art Zone with Nancy Guppy show is big. Like, oodles of show. Show spilling out into the hallways and splashing unsuspecting passerby. It’s large, is what I’m saying. The thing’s just so mammoth, honestly, that I can’t really say that much about it in the space allotted, other than just watch it. Several times.

\n

Random Factoids:

\n

1) The performance by nuclear fingered Guitarist Angelo Pizarro was captured on the first take. In TV terms, this is like throwing a perfect game, and then finding a coupon for a free sub sandwich in the dugout.

\n

2) After the cameras stopped rolling, Angie Louise and Nancy collaborated on an impromptu scat singing session that, without hyperbole, was the most amazing thing in the history of ever. When Angie and her band come back into the studio, I’m demanding a rematch.

\n

3) Human Jazzman Christian Swenson worked through a number of fascinating, seemingly improvised routines until delivering one that perfectly encapsulated the high points of everything that had gone before. (Moral: sometimes, multiple takes are good, too.)

\n

4) The severely cool bassist for The Jim Basnight band has a jewelry box crammed full of different styles of rings, from which he then selects based on the mood of the room. Judging from his final assortment, I think he liked us.

\n

5) The AriEm sisters sound even better live.

\n

Next week: Turkey Haze. Did I mention that this week’s show is huge?

This week on CityStream, Penny LeGate tells the story of displaced Bhutanese citizens eager to start a whole new life in Seattle.

\n

Khem Rizal and his family spent years living in a refugee camp in Nepal with hundreds of other displaced Bhutanese citizens.  Forced out of their homeland with no hope of returning, Khem knew they had to begin life anew in another country.

\n

“I am the one who forced my parents to resettle in the United States because I didn’t want to be a refugee my whole life,” Rizal said. Now living in Seattle and working in Queen Anne, Rizal, his parents and siblings must find jobs, learn a new language, and fit into a whole new culture while still preserving their own way of life. And the Rizals aren’t the only ones facing this daunting task.
