The National Weather Service forecast calls for continuing rain and wind for the next several days. With any storm there is the potential for downed power lines or branches falling into lines. Both situations are dangerous. Treat any downed power line as if it is energized. A branch hanging on a wire will conduct electricity too.

\n

Stay safe! If you encounter either situation, stay away and call us. We’ll send a crew to make the area safe and make and needed repairs.

About 4,970 City Light customers are currently without power. City light crews have been dispatched to restore service. The following areas are affected:

\n

South Seattle:

\n

About 4,657 customers lost power at about 6:20 p.m. The cause is unknown and the estimated time of power restoral is undetermined. Affected areas include parts of Rainier Beach, Beacon Hill and Seward Park. The general boundaries of the outage are S. Alaska St. on the North, S. Norfolk St. on the South, Lake Washington on the East and Airport Way S. on the West.

\n

Shoreline:

\n

Two small power outages are reported in Shoreline. A tree on the wire caused the first outage at about 5 p.m. About 43 customers are without service. The general boundaries of the outage are 21st PL NW on the North, NW 190th St to the South, 20th Ave. N.W. on the East and NW 193rd St. on the West. The estimated restoral time is 11:40 p.m.

\n

The second outage in Shoreline is affecting about 270 customers. The cause is a downed wire. The general boundaries of the outage are N. 205 St. to the North, N.E. 195th St. to the South, 205th St. to the East and Ashworth Ave. N. on the West. The estimated restoral time is about midnight.

\n

Not all homes and businesses within those general boundaries were affected.

Seattle City Light is preparing its crews for two storms expected to bring rain and strong winds to the Puget Sound area today and Thursday.

\n

The National Weather Service issued a High Wind Advisory today with a forecast for sustained winds of 25 to 35 mph, gusting up to 50 mph. Another storm is expected to follow late Wednesday or early Thursday.

\n

“Our crews are ready so that if either of these storms causes any outages, we can restore power as quickly as possible,” Superintendent Jorge Carrasco said. “Even so, we want our customers to be prepared in the event of an outage. It’s always a good time to put together an emergency preparedness kit with enough food and supplies to last your family for at least three days.”

\n

Other items to include in an emergency kit are a hand-crank or battery-operated flashlight and radio, fresh batteries, a survival blanket, a first aid kit, pocket tissues and hand sanitizer wipes.

\n

For a checklist, go to www.takewinterbystorm.org
\nCity Light also reminds customers to be safe. Downed lines can be dangerous. Also, City Light urges customers to be prepared for any possible outages. Here’s what customers can do if they experience a power outage:

\n

* Do not go near any downed wire. Wires should always be assumed to be “live” and dangerous. If someone seeks a downed wire, they should call (206) 706-0051;

\n

* Do not use a barbecue grill or generator inside the house or in a garage that is attached to the house. Do not use a grill or generator near a home air intake vent or near windows;
\n* Do not use fossil fuel burning auxiliary heating sources;
\n* Know how to manually override electric garage doors, security doors and gates;
\n* Have a land line phone or fully charged cell phone available – cordless phones won’t work when the power is out;
\n* Unplug electrical appliances if the power goes out so that when the power comes back on, there won’t be a surge that could damage sensitive electronic equipment;
\n* Use battery-powered flashlights – not candles or oil lamps;
\n* Close doors, windows, curtains, and unused fireplace dampers to retain heat if there is an outage.
